Chicago: The windy city 2
This is the story of how I visited Chicago
The stone family has moved away but is visiting their old home in Chicago. I’m Leola and I’m telling the story. My older brother is Mac and yes I have a Mom and a Dad. We now live in awful North Carolina. My life is just terrible.
Chapter 1: Mon.
“Ugh, I think I may throw up.” I remarked staggering around.
My brother laughed, “That plane ride really did run you through.”
I glared at him, “It’s not like you get airplane sickness you just don’t understand.”
“Yeah but I probably would do a better job not throwing up than you.” He teased me.
“I bet you wouldn't.”
“Ok, ok , ok we all know you get airplane sickness and we appreciate that you didn't throw up on us but we should catch our ride out of here," my Dad interrupted our argument naturally. He is always saying it’s for our safety but I don’t believe him because I’m always fine.
We followed our Dad out of the airport and into the pickup area. There the Petersons were waiting for us. They picked us up and drove us out of the airport.
“What took you so long?” their Dad asked us.
“Argument problem with those two” my Dad turned to look at us. “Well you kids shouldn’t fight it’s for your safety.” I groaned why do Dads always say that? We drove on in silence. My day so far was terrible but I guess it got better. This was the rest of my day:
1. We dropped of Mac at the Lamons family’s house.
2. The rest of us walked to the Maiz family’s house.
3. The three of us went to Clarkes to eat.
4. Then we dropped my stuff off at the Clay family’s house.
5. I exchanged greetings with my fellow friend Marcie and she exchanged greetings with me.
6. My Mom, Amy, and I talked for a while.
7. My Mom leaves.
8. Amy and I hang out and play with with her cats (sometimes they get fat).
Chapter 2: Tues.
My Mom had a great idea the next day! Her idea was simple. We go to the Moca Museum and use Amy’s pass to get in. But it involved a lot of walking. When I say we had to walk , I’m not kidding. I mean walk! First we only had to walk like four blocks to get to the bus station, only to just miss the bus. So we only had to wait another ten minutes. When the bus came it was full. So crowded we had to stand with like five other people and it just got worse. I need to tell my Mom not to board a bus during morning rush hour it’s the worst time ever to get on a bus.
I always wonder why are bus stops never in front of the place you’re trying to get to? I mean we weren’t even close to the museum. So we had to walk two blocks to get to the DuSable bridge then walk maybe another four blocks! Then you get to the museum. After that you had to walk inside the museum. Thank goodness the exhibits were small only like six pieces of art in each exhibit. My favorite exhibit was the small, medium, large, and extra large. But there only were four pieces of art.
Ok it sounds like I complain a lot and that's partly true but I’m really nice if you really get to know me. So yes, there was more walking. After we left the museum we got lunch at a nearby farmer’s market. Then had to walk probably six blocks back to the bus station, rode the bus back, and walked four more block to get back to the house.
Chapter 3: Wed.
Now because of so much walking yesterday I have sore feet! Like anyone would care. And today I just can’t wait to hear what we’re going to do. I bet it involves more walking. And it turns out I was right! My Mom wanted to walk around the neighborhood. You know like check out stores stuff like that. So we ended up going to the Medici bakery and getting pastries. Then Amy wanted to go to the 57th street bookstore. Typical. So even though I am ten years old I read baby books. Don’t judge me yet I only read them for fun and my friend read some to. By the way she started reading baby books in the bookstore before I did so I got the idea from her.
Then as we were leaving, Amy remembered she had left her sweater at the bookstore and had to go back. So we had to wait for her. Then as we were coming back my Mom got another idea.
She said, “We could go to the pet store Parker’s.” So Amy and I browsed the store looking for items of interest like cat toys for Amy’s cats. Finally we left but then as we were walking Amy spotted a hawk. With Amy wanting to be an ornithologist (someone who studies birds) it was easy for her to spot birds and she always did.
It took us a long time to walk back to the house but we finally made it. I think my feet are even more sore. And I suppose my Mom wants to walk somewhere else tomorrow and my feet will be really sore.
Chapter 4: Thurs.
Actually I was right again. My Mom did want to go somewhere again that will probably make my feet super sore.I mean what’s up with her? And today my Mom wanted to go to the lake. Huray! More walking. At least four more blocks of walking just to get there and this time my brother’s coming! And I know for sure Mac is going to want to stop at First Aid comics. Ugh, if that happens we’ll never get to the lake.
Turns out my brother did want to stop at First Aid Comics. Thankfully only for a few minutes to see if there was anything new. Though the stop was annoying, I did appreciate the rest time. We finally did make it to the lake and swam for a while. We left maybe an hour later. The rest of the day I spent reading and crocheting.
Chapter 5: Fri.
Last day before we leave. I can’t believe it. I’ve only just started really talking about Chicago. Today my Mom wanted to go to a music concert at Millennium Park in the Pritzker Pavilion. So of course we had to walk to the train station. Turns out the ticket booths were out of service so we had to buy tickets on the train like many others. I am so mad and here's why my Mom wanted us to get on the 3:45 p.m. train when the concert was at 6:00 p.m., so we’ll have to wait for like two hours!
A little while later the Reigh family found us and both of our families found a spot to sit together. I can’t believe that my brother got out of coming to this concert! He is so lucky. Instead he gets to help the Lamons set up the fireworks for July 4th even though it’s July 3rd they are going to set them off today probably just for us.
Somethings you should probably want to know about Millennium Park:
Chapter 6: Sat.
You might expect that like most stories this story would end up happily. Our family would catch the flight home and make it back in time to go to a party at Elon University, but it didn’t work out exactly that way you'll see. That morning the family woke up a little late but that didn’t matter, what mattered was the traffic jam to come but we’re not there yet. First they picked up the mail for the Petersons. Then they went to the bathroom. After that they packed up and got in the car with the Lamons who drove off.
Now we get to that traffic jam. It was pretty bad but thankfully didn’t last that long. We made it to the airport. It was really crowded at the airport and that does explain the traffic jam. Going through security was very slow. The lines at the metal detectors were really long. And the hallways were really crowded! We almost gave up hope of getting to the gate on time. Our gate was A7 but despite our efforts we were too late. The plane had already boarded and we could see it taking off.
“Oh no oh no oh no” I whispered to myself running around in circles. “We can’t of missed it! What are we going to do?” I dramatically fell to the ground moaning.
“Can I get rid of her?” My brother asked, “Her dramatic theater performance is giving me a headache.” My dad glared at him sternly. “Just a suggestion,” he added.
“No one is getting rid of anyone what we should be doing is finding the next flight home," my Mom stated firmly. We all followed her to the information desk. All but me who slumped in a chair miserably staring at the wall and telling myself it’s not real.
Meanwhile I figured this out later because I wasn’t at the desk with the rest of them that the next flight home wouldn’t be for a while. But my parents went ahead and purchased the tickets for that flight While the desk person figured out when the next flight was. The next flight wasn’t until tomorrow morning!
Chapter 7: Sun.
Well sorry for the cliffhanger but I always wanted to put a cliffhanger in a story. After we found out the next flight wouldn’t be till tomorrow morning we managed to get the Lamons back so they could pick us up, believe me it wasn’t easy. We stayed at the Peterson’s house another night. The next morning we got up extra early to catch our flight. We packed up our stuff again and this time had the Reigh family picked us up. We drove to the airport and luckily there was no traffic jam like last time and no long lines at the metal detectors.
We got to the gate with lots of time to spare. All of us boarded the plane. Two and a half hours later and we found ourselves back at our house.
“So much for that party.” I sighed stretching on the couch.
“You don’t suppose we have to go to another party this evening?” my Dad remarked glancing at us mischievously.
“What ever do you mean?” I asked sitting up and yawning.
“Well there seemed to be a little rain problem yesterday and the University party has been rescheduled!”
And so now we have the happy ending. We had all found a flight home and got to go to the party all except Mac who decided to stay home. I personally feel bad for him after all I did have quite a stash of candy afterwards. Anyway my story comes to the end, as I have nothing else to say I will now conclude my story.
